Personality & Traits

General Overview Ryan talks tough. He curses freely, jabs friends in the ribs with sarcasm, and has the swagger to fill a room. It’s half-shield, half-theatre. Beneath it, he’s built of very soft clay: protective, easily wounded, loyal to a fault. When someone betrays his trust, he cuts them out quickly and completely, because if he doesn’t, the hurt will linger for too long.

He values honesty above everything. Growing up the youngest of five on a Midwestern farm taught him the worth of plain speech, of calling things what they are. He respects strength, but not bluster. Discipline, but not cruelty.

In combat, he is decisive, precise, and steady-handed. Off-duty, he can be the loudest voice at the table, but also the first to take a friend’s side when tempers flare.

Personal History Ryan Kellerman was born in Vandalia, Illinois, Earth, in the spring of 2340, the last child of Harrison and Antoinette. His father taught high school history and baseball; his mother kept the family farm going, turning over black Illinois soil that had been in the family for six generations. They grew the kind of vegetables that fed whole towns in summer–sweet corn, tomatoes that stained shirts red, snap beans that squeaked perfectly between the teeth.

The boy grew tall and fast. By twelve, he was skating like a blade of sunlight across frozen ponds, by sixteen his shoulders filled-out with football and baseball, his legs cut lean from track. Coaches called him natural, though he knew it was just stubbornness and sweat. He grew up alongside three brothers–Adam, Brock, Kyle–and a sister, Phoebe. Together they worked anti-grav units to move hay bales, “mended” fences, and argued about nothing and everything.

In 2358 he entered Starfleet Academy. Security and tactical came naturally; psychology and diplomacy were harder, but he kept at them. He cursed his way through late-night study sessions, but he stuck. He wasn’t the best student, but he was the one who refused to quit. That counted for something.

It was at the Academy that he met Darius Korveth–a half-human, half-Orion with sharp eyes and a steady presence. They began as study partners, then as lovers, then as husbands, marrying in 2361, young and sure of themselves. Ryan followed him aboard the USS Astera after graduation, proud, loyal, convinced they could weather anything together.

They couldn’t. Four years later, Darius returned from an undercover assignment that required compromises Ryan could not forgive. Ryan requested transfer off the Galileo almost immediately. The marriage, in all but name, was over. His protective streak–the one that guarded teammates on the ice, that shielded younger siblings from barnyard brawls–turned inward. He learned how to wall himself off, how to keep a hard outer shell. The soft center remained, but he buried it.

By 2367, Ryan was a lieutenant junior grade aboard the USS Intrepid, a Cheyenne-class ship. Off duty, he could drink, curse, and talk smack with the best of them. On duty, he was disciplined, eyes sharp over phaser banks and tactical readouts.

Then came the Borg. At Wolf 359, the Federation fell. The Intrepid burned over the Sol System, one more ship gutted and turned to cinders. Ryan survived, scattered with the rest of Starfleet’s remnants, carrying his ghosts with him.
