Mission:
Collating Data
Location: Bridge | Deck 1 | USS Crazy Horse
Timeline: MD002 - 0745
The ship, as Captain M'Raz walked its corridors for the first time, wasn't his. This Galaxy Class vessel lacked the sixteen years of history he'd had with the Jane Addams. The long scratch just outside of Security where two of the crewman had staged a sword fight on Gamma Shift one night. The coffee stain just outside the Ready Room from back when Raz was the First Officer and his Captain carried a cup with him everywhere he went, gesturing with his mug, as he spoke while everyone around him waited for him to spill. The phaser burn in Shuttlebay 1 where Crewman Sajan lost his life. His ship, the Jane Addams, was lived in with a thousand memories packed into his aging hull. He knew its stories, recognized its scars. But the Crazy Horse? She had no tales to tell; she was ... new ... and that wasn't a word that Raz particularly liked.
He entered the Bridge unnoticed and paused a moment to watch the Bridge Crew settling into their stations. And while he could recite the name and function of every station on the Bridge, it still felt a bit alien. As he stepped forward, Anders came toward him, PADD in hand. "Spoke with Admiral Stillwell early this morning," he said, "and he's in agreement. The Crazy Horse is to be assigned to you. You ... uh ... ready for this?"
Raz grunted, a sound that was hovered somewhere between agreement and disgust. When he saw Anders hesitate, Raz nodded. "I'm ready," he said softly. "Let's do this." He followed Anders to the Command Pit and turned to face him, nodding again to indicate that Anders should start.
"Attention to orders," Anders said and then again, when no one moved, in a louder voice, "Attention to Orders."
Jason snapped to attention as they begun the process of transferring the ship over to Raz. Knowing his CO the way he had for the past few years, he knew losing the Jane Addams wasn't going to be easy for him. The saddest part is that he didn't even time to grieve the ship properly.
"To Lt. Commander Jason Anders, Team Lead for the Ghostkin Installation Team, Deep Space Repair Beta Two, Stardate 44206.4. You are hereby requested and required to transfer command of the USS Crazy Horse, NCC 17014, to Captain M'Raz, formerly commanding officer of the USS Jane Addams as of this date. Signed Admiral Chester Stillwell, Starfleet Command, aboard the USS Roosevelt." Anders looked up from the PADD he'd been reading and said, "Computer, transfer all command codes to Captain M'Raz. Voice authorization Juliet Alpha 3722."
The computer answered immediately. "Transfer complete. The USS Crazy Horse is now under command of Captain M'Raz."
"I relieve you, Sir," Raz said as he reached out his right paw. "And thank you for everything you've done to get her ready."
"I stand relieved," Anders said as he accepted the handshake. "Take care of her. There's not a scratch on her, well, except for that one hull scrape from when Mazurski screwed up in a Workbee. We didn't have time to do the repair but it's a easy fix."
"Leave it," Raz said at once. "You've got to get out of here. The Admiral is waiting for you."
"Yes, he is," Anders said. "He's running Starfleet at the moment, from what I hear. So probably best I don't upset him, at least not yet. Permission to go, Sir?"
"Permission granted," Raz said. "Safe travels."
Anders smiled, topping it off with a lazy salute and headed for the turbolift, while Raz turned to the Bridge crew. "Man your stations," he said. "And set course for Memory Alpha. I've got some research to do."
"Aye, Sir," the helmsman said. "Deep Space Repair Beta Two this is the USS Crazy Horse requesting permission to depart."
Mazurski came online at once. "Permission granted, Crazy Horse."
"Engineering," Raz said. "Disengage umbilicals and docking ports. Helm, maneuvering thrusters set to station keeping."
Down in main engineering, Clarke double checked the master systems display, eyes checking the status display for any red lights. Finding none, he spoke up for the intercom system to pick up his words. "All umbilicals have been detached, captain."
"Aye, Sir," the helmsman answered, "thrusters set to station keeping. Deep Space Repair Beta Two, disengage tractor moorings."
"Tractor Moorings disengaged," Mazurski said. "Be safe out there, Crazy Horse."
"Thank you," the helmsman replied. "Crazy Horse out."
"Take us out," Raz said. "Engineering, ready for warp?"
Clarke nodded as if he were on the bridge. "Aye sir. Just give the word. She's ready for a run."
"Aye, Sir," the helmsman said. Using the maneuvering thrusters, she brought the ship out of the space frame and then switched to impulse engines to clear the facility entirely.
The First Officer took his post to the right of the center chair, looking over at the small terminal next to his seat. "Getting reports from across all departments that they are clear for departure."
[In Sickbay]
Sickbay hummed with activity as Pierce moved from biobed to biobed, double-checking diagnostics and making sure every medical kit was accounted for. The staff were efficient—years of drills had made departure protocols second nature—but he insisted on laying eyes on the readiness reports himself.
When the announcement came over the comms that the Crazy Horse was officially under Captain M’Raz’s command and preparing to depart, Pierce paused by the main console. He tapped his badge.
“Bridge, this is Sickbay. All medical systems are online and fully operational. We are ready for departure.”
He hesitated a moment, then added, his tone even but carrying a note of quiet reassurance meant for the Captain as much as for anyone else listening:
“Doctor Pierce standing by. We’ll keep her crew safe, Sir—and see that the Crazy Horse earns stories of her own.”
He closed the channel, turning back to his team with a nod. “Alright, people—let’s make this clean. First departure’s never the last time we’ll be tested.”
[Back on the Bridge]
"Set course for Memory Alpha, helm," Raz said. "Warp 6." He settled back into the seat, the contours fitting his lean form and noted that the divots that had made his last 'seat' so unique were missing. One point, he thought, for the Crazy Horse.
